Bay Area Science & Engineering Fair 2008
Sponsored by ArcelorMittal Dofasco

March 26th to March 29th— Sheridan —
BASEF is a registered charity and relies entirely on volunteers and sponsors.

The 48th annual science fair for Hamilton, Halton Region and Haldimand, Norfolk and Brant Counties was held Wednesday, March 26th to Saturday, March 29th at the Sheridan Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning in Oakville, Ontario.

Cash, prizes and scholarships worth more than $150,000 were awarded to student participants of BASEF 2008 at Sheridan. Especial congratulations to Tobias Williams, winner of the ArcelorMittal Dofasco Best-in-Fair award, and to the twenty students who won all-expense-paid trips to compete at either the Canada Wide Science Fair in Ottawa (Saturday, May 10th to Sunday, May 18th) or the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Atlanta, Georgia (Sunday, May 11th to Saturday, May 17th). See the results page for full information.

Just back from BASEF?

We really want to know what you think about your experience. There are separate surveys for students, judges and teachers on the BASEF 2008 questionnaire page.

Note that you'll need a password to start each survey - one will be sent to you via email if you have not already received it. You may, of course, email any comments to us at

What happens at BASEF?

The fair takes place over the course of four days, starting with project set up on Wednesday, student activities and judging on Thursday, and culminating in the award ceremony and public viewing on Saturday. Top winners go on to compete at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Atlanta and the Canada-Wide Science Fair in Ottawa.

The one-page article A Beginner's Introduction to BASEF will give you a quick overview; parents can find more information about what to expect in the BASEF 2006 Parents section. Top projects will go on to compete at the International or Canada-Wide science fairs as part of Team BASEF.

BASEF 2008 is open to students registered in grades 7 through 12 in public, separate and independent schools within the City of Hamilton, the Region of Halton, and Haldimand, Norfolk and Brant Counties, as well as to home-schooled students living in the same regions.
